UNP party policy 2024
The United National Party (UNP) of Sri Lanka, founded in 1946, has played a central role in the country's political landscape. Known for its center-right, pro-market stance, the UNP has historically championed economic liberalization, free-market policies, and privatization. It emphasizes economic growth through private sector development, foreign investment, and trade liberalization, aiming to position Sri Lanka as a hub for international business and trade.
The UNP advocates for democratic governance, the rule of law, and the protection of individual freedoms. It supports a multi-ethnic, multi-religious society and has promoted policies aimed at reconciliation and ethnic harmony, particularly in the post-civil war era. The party has endorsed devolution of power to the provinces as a means to address ethnic tensions, particularly with the Tamil minority.
In terms of social policy, the UNP has focused on improving education, healthcare, and social services, though it often seeks to do so through public-private partnerships rather than extensive state intervention. The party has also prioritized infrastructure development, seeking to modernize the country’s roads, ports, and other critical infrastructure to support economic growth.
In recent years, the UNP has faced challenges, particularly after losing its dominant position in the 2020 parliamentary elections. However, it continues to be a significant player in Sri Lankan politics, advocating for a balanced approach to economic development and social progress while navigating the complexities of a multi-ethnic nation.
